The first sports competition held between people with disabilities occurred in 1888, in Berlin, Germany, and aimed the integration of the hearing impaired. However, what was called later “Paralympic Movement” began with an initiative of the war fugitive neurosurgeon, Ludwig Guttmann, a german who around 1944 opened a specialized center to treat spinal injuries and saw in the sports a way to rehabilitate wounded soldiers by the Second World War, also encouraging competition between them.

In 1948, when the Olympic Games in London happened, Ludwig Guttmann also expanded the competition that he used to encourage through the organization of the Stoke Mandeville Games. Besides that, it was also in this year that for the first time, 16 military people, men and women with some kind of injury took part in the archery competition along with the other athletes already members. From then on, the Stoke Mandeville Games earned more participants and stopped to gather only wheelchair users, including other types of disabilities too.

In 1952, soldiers from the Netherlands took part in these games too, which made them get greater proportions, becoming international.

In 1960, these games were held in Rome, exactly same place and year of the Olympic Games. So, later, this edition ended up to be formalized as the first of Paralympic Games, and thenceforth , they also started to happen every four years.

Only in 1988, though the two games have started to happen in the same cities and arenas, despite already occurring in the same years.

In 1989, in Germany, it was founded the International Paralympic Committee.

From 2004 on, and due to the idea of joining the Olympic and Paralympic committees, they have started to happen in the same host city.

Nowadays, the Paralympic Games represent the biggest sporting event of high performance for people with disabilities, with the technology as a help for the evolution of the competitions. New technological devices that aim the market, for example, are often tested by these athletes. Furthermore, the success of this event demonstrate that, besides the incentive of practicing sports, there is also the social inclusion of this group through the stimulation of the visibility and the break of prejudices, showing, therefore, that there is no game more or less important and nor reason to distinguish or abash people from each other.

A primeira competição esportiva realizada entre pessoas com deficiência se deu em 1888, em Berlim, na Alemanha, e tinha como finalidade a integração dos deficientes auditivos. Porém, o que se convencionou chamar de “Movimento Paralímpico” mais tarde, começou na Inglaterra, através de uma iniciativa do neurocirurgião alemão foragido da guerra, Ludwig Guttmann, que por volta de 1944, abriu um centro especializado para tratar de lesões na coluna e viu no esporte uma forma de reabilitar soldados feridos na Segunda Guerra, incentivando também a competição entre eles.

Em 1948, quando aconteceram os Jogos Olímpicos de Londres, Ludwig Guttmann também ampliou as competições para reabilitação que incentivava, passando a organizar os Jogos de Stoke Mandeville. Além disso, foi nesse ano também que, pela primeira vez, 16 militares, homens e mulheres, com algum tipo de lesão participaram da competição de tiro com arco junto com os outros atletas já inscritos. A partir daí, os Jogos de Stoke Mandeville ganham mais participantes, e deixam de reunir apenas cadeirantes, passando a englobar outros tipos de deficiências.

Em 1952, militares da Holanda também participam desses jogos, o que faz com que eles tomem maiores proporções, se internacionalizando.

Em 1960, esses jogos aconteceram em Roma, exatamente mesmo lugar e mesmo ano em que se deram os Jogos Olímpicos. Dessa forma, mais tarde, essa edição acaba sendo oficializada como a primeira dos Jogos Paralímpicos, e a partir daí, eles também passam a acontecer de quatro em quatro anos.

Apenas em 1988, no entanto, os dois Jogos passam a acontecer nas mesmas cidades e arenas, apesar de já acontecerem nos mesmos anos.

Em 1989, na Alemanha, foi fundado o Comitê Paralímpico Internacional.

A partir de 2004, e por conta da ideia de unir os comitês Olímpico e Paralímpico, eles passam a acontecer na mesma cidade sede.

Hoje em dia, os Jogos Paralímpicos representam o maior evento esportivo de alto rendimento para pessoas deficientes, tendo sido a tecnologia também uma ajuda para a evolução de suas competições. Novos artefatos tecnológicos que visam o mercado são, por exemplo, muitas vezes testados por esses atletas. Além disso, o sucesso desse evento demonstra que, em adição ao incentivo da prática de esportes, há também a inclusão social desse grupo, através do incentivo à visibilidade e à quebra de preconceitos, mostrando dessa forma, que não há Jogo mais ou menos importante e nem tampouco motivo de diferenciar ou inferiorizar as pessoas entre si.
